Where do I Even Start? Neo Yokio Review

To be honest I still don’t know what to say. This show is puzzling on so many levels that it almost makes me want to watch it a second time. ALMOST, but good heavens I won’t! Welcome to Neo Yokio everybody, buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

A weird place to visit

I’m still not quite sure what this show is, a parody, just a comedy, a fanfic? It’s classified as a comedy so I’ll go with that I guess? I have to apologize if I’ve been confusing, it’s just that I’m confused myself. After watching the trailers, I approached this show expecting an absolute mess! But to be absolutely honest, the show didn’t meet those expectations either. I guess the problem is that I don’t know who the target demographic is for this show. It had some ideas that could have been good and smart, but they didn't get quite there, and almost smart is not the same as smart, it means you’re still dumb!

Also, I don’t know how I would react to people cosplaying as this guys

in an Anime Convention.

Ok, the story takes places in the fictional capital of the world Neo Yokio, duh! We can discern that the name was inspired by New York, the actual capital of the world, and Tokyo, because Aaanime!! Neo Yokio is the world’s center of science, fashion, and magic. A place that from decades has accepted spellcasting immigrants in exchange for their service in exorcising demons. This magical immigrants, with the pass of time, have become well respected wealthy families that work for the government of Neo Yokio.

Magic is also useful to send your rival, and best character, flying because you’re

salty about being dumped.

All of this was explained in a video that clearly was made to emulate a VHS tape. This explains to us that the look, and animation of the show was done the way it is purposely to emote anime of yesteryears. This will be a great example of having good ideas but not knowing what to do with them, but I digress, I’ll talk about that later. Our main character is a member of one of those exorcist families. Kaz Kaan, played by Jaden Smith, is our reluctant hero that tries to juggle his high class fashionable life with his duties as an exorcist, also he’s pretty cheerful.

Now here is the first thing that caused an inner struggle in my critic mind. Kaz is not likeable, at first I was blaming the voice acting, I thought that it lack personality. But after watching more of the show I came to realized that the voice fits perfectly. Kaz is just not likeable! He is supposed to be this rich kid whose biggest concern is fashion and that the worst drama in his life is that he was dumped and now he’s trying to achieve, and keep, the position of Neo Yokio’s number one bachelor.

   

Ok.

There’s no problem with having a main character like that, it’s just that Kaz doesn’t grow, he literally ends the series they way he started. The writers went out of their way to show this, and we can say it is on purpose. Well it is a comedy, and we can argue that the humor comes from Kaz’s personality and deposition to the world around him. In that case I would say he needs a straight man to contrast his personality, and his mecha butler just won’t suffice most of the time.

Yes, he has a mecha buttler, not robot butler, but mecha.

That’s an important distinction, believe me.

I say that we need more of the supporting characters. I don’t hate Kaz, he did make me chuckle a few times, but too much of him gets annoying. I gotta say that I didn’t have a problem with the other characters, I actually was happy to see the supporting cast just because I needed a break from Kaz.

This one got a chuckle out of my girlfriend.

This problem is so great that our main character’s rival, to me at least, became one of the best characters. Arcangelo Corelli is suppose to be “the a-hole” of the series, slowly but surely, I came to like him more than Kaz. Especially in the later episodes when we found out that he just wanted to be Kaz’s “homie”. HECK, SPOILER ALERT! He even helps Kaz in the final episode of the season.

He is pretty cool to hang around with.

As a matter of fact, one of the best episode was the “Ranma ½” parody episode just because it featured Kaz’s friends predominantly. The best part was that his friends weren’t going put up with his shit!

The thing about the picture above is that it shows that someone in the team watched anime at some point, and that puzzles me! The show is fill with the most cringy cliches tropes in the book! I feel like those cliches are there just because “Aaaanime” is like that right? No other reasons! Either this was written by someone that doesn’t know what anime is, or the biggest weeb out there, that the only thing he knows about anime is the tropes.

At the end, it just boils down to the fact that it’s not as bad as it is cringy. The show is filled with ideas that could’ve gone somewhere but they didn’t. Characters that you could’ve like, but you spend most of your time with Kaz. As a comedy, it got some laughs out of me, but then you’re assaulted by cringe. It’s a puzzling show to say the least, but not the train wreck that the trailers might lead you to believe.

So would I recommend this show? Well, only if you have to satisfy your morbid curiosity, only if you really have to know. Me, personally, I wouldn’t watch this show again, but if another season comes out I might have to watch it just because I would REALLY need to know. In conclusion I will give this show three big Toblerones out of one recurrent joke. The show is not amazing by any means, but it does have its moments and I can see this becoming some people’s guilty pleasure. So if you like trashy shows, or your curiosity is getting the better of you, go for it, otherwise you're not missing much. This show is weird man.

You will not get this joke until you watch show, and now you have to know.

Games I’m Looking Forward To ‘Project Octopath Traveler’ First Impressions

You know, this week I wanted to talk about Dragon Ball FighterZ’s close beta, the mechanics, the netcode, etc. Unfortunately I wasn’t part of the lucky chosen ones that join the close beta, so I’m going to talk about other games that I can’t wait to play. A few weeks ago Nintendo gave us another “Nintendo Direct” and this time it was going to be longer than the one for E3, Yay! I gotta say though, I wasn’t too hype. We just got information about a lot of stuff we already knew, and I was aware that they were going to focus a great deal on “Mario Odyssey”. But there was a game I had my eye on from previous directs that they decided to talk about a bit more, and they surprise me with a demo for it.

“Project Octopath Traveler” is a JRPG developed by Square Enix that is a throwback to RPG’s of yesteryears with 2D-HD graphics. When we talk about throwback RPG’s, and Square Enix, you might immediately think “Bravely Default” the RPG that everyone loves because it was what RPG fans had been starving for instead of the crazy shenanigans that Square Enix was feeding us! Well guess what, the same team that worked on “Bravely Default” is working on this.

 This game looks GORGEOUS!!

Let’s just say that this game looks amazing! The light effects, the shadows, the sparkling reflections in cave’s walls that give them a wet look, it just looks gorgeous. When it comes to combat, it is our typical turn-based affair, but with some minor tweaks that spice up the formula.

 I know is pretty and all but watch out for random encounters.

Every turn during combat you get something call “booster points”, you spend those points to modify your normal attacks and special moves. For every point spent you increase the number of times that you attack with your normal attack, and your special moves get a power up. Increasing the number of times that you can hit is tremendously helpful because of another little mechanic in the game that will force to plan your attacks. When you face an enemy you will notice that under them there is a blue shield with a number inside, and next to that shield is the word “weak” and under the word a few empty boxes.

 You will see the points you have under the name of your character.

Every enemy is weak to different attacks, every time you hit an enemy with its weakness, aside from doing more damage, you reduce the number inside the shield. When the shield reaches zero the enemy enters into a “Break” state, where it’s stun and won’t attack the next turn.

 After you reveal the weakness of your enemy, it will be display in those empty boxes I was talking about.

I started the demo with the warrior Olberic, who starts with two different weapons that you can change during combat. That encouraged me to experiment around to find foe’s weaknesses. The demo only lets you pick between two characters, but the full version will let you choose between eight characters, hence the “Octopath” in the name.

 You know, Olberic is pretty nice but he has the tendency of beating up people.

Maybe that’s just me playing as him, more on that later.

Every character has it's unique story line and doesn't matter who you pick, the other characters will join your party later in the game. Every character has an special ability that allows them to interact with NPC’s in different ways. For example Olberic, as a warrior, can challenge every NPC to fight, so I proceeded to beat up everyone in town, well until I fought that lady outside the bar that was ranked with six stars, I mean, why don’t we send HER to save the world!

 You might want to start as the dancer if you are a more peaceful pearson.

Primrose’s ability is really interesting, instead of going around picking fights, you can seduce villagers with your hips that don’t lie and they will follow you around. Then they can join you in battle and offer support. This left me really excited to see what other abilities the rest of the characters will have.

 I mean, one of them has to be the one that is good at JoJo posing right?

I stream myself playing this demo for almost four hours, and I gotta say, it was pretty fun! I’m really looking forward to the full game, and if you are a fan of RPG’s, I really encourage you to play this demo and see for yourself. Expect a full review of this game when it’s finally release,  now I return to the deepest darkest corners of my dwelling. Good-bye for now my friends.

By the way, I love it how this guy was my size but as soon as I enter battle, he turned into this giant.

Reboots that should happen!!!

Well, it’s that time again. Time to talk about reboots. I know we don’t like them as a whole but if done right you can have something great a few of these shows or movies. The following have been canceled or bombed at the box office due to someone dropping the ball and hopefully someone can pick it up.   



Black Dynamite! Was only on Adult Swim for 2 seasons. The show is based on a movie starring Michael Jai White parodying blaxploitation films of the 70’s. The cartoon as an extension of that. Bringing back the cast of the film to play themselves in animated form. It was a very funny series but I don’t think the humor fell on a lot of people. The show was definitely was targeting a black audience which may have had a lot of it humor lost on people who don't know the culture. It was also not slotted well in conjunction with other shows such as.

It’s content also could get very offensive. They did not hold back when it came it making fun of celebrities. From Michael Jackson being an Alien drugged up Elvis Presley.

To rescuing a cannibalistic MR. T in Vietnam.



 Maybe they can blast the team into the present and have new adventures. Just a thought.

Drawn Together was the ultimate offensive experiment. The took MTV’s “real world” premise and made it a cartoon. They took seven cartoon types and parodied them to an extreme. For example, Princess Clara is a Disney Princess type. She sings songs and animals come out of the woodwork. But here’s the deal she’s a homophobic racist.



There an Asian battle card monster named LING LING. He is the ultimate Asian stereotype that even comes with his own language.



Both are voiced by the legendary Tara Strong.



 That’s just a sample of what type of savagery and talent that was behind this show. It was short lived due to their barrier-breaking 4th wall shattering content that even comedy central executives believe they went too far. I would like to see the return of this show due to the new cartoons that are out that can be made fun of. From my little pony to Steven Universe and to the world of Anime. Boondocks needs to come back.But we need  Aaron  McGruder back at the helm as head writer. When it was announced that he was not the writer for the 4th season as a fan I was disheartened but I had hope. The first episode was kinda funny.



Throwing a mean left hook at the music industry that has been about more gossip than substance. The rest of the season came off mean-spirited and unfunny. Rodney Barnes & Angela Nissel two producers decided they could write this show.

 

It was just awful. As a matter of fact, there’s an episode that ran a GOOD TIMES gag to the point it wasn’t funny. To be honest, it wasn’t that funny, to begin with. If you check out youtube they have been the season for streams of the Boondocks on for the last 3 weeks so hopefully, you see it.  Somehow Drawn Together a show written by white guys ( not that there is anything wrong with that )did the joke so much better see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESx1rGlai0Q .

IT... was LIT (Movie Review Spoilers Probably!!)

Well this summer has been very interesting movie wise there were hits misses and some straight up bombs.  

But the one movie I have been waiting patiently for was the IT remake. For those of you that don’t know IT was a 2 part miniseries based on Stephen King novel of the same name. The story is about a small town in Maine (Like most King Novels) that is plagued with a series of kidnappings and deaths every 27 years. The series aired in 1990 to critical acclaim.  Now it’s on the big screen for a new generation. Oh shit!!!!!

well played movie well played.  The main cast of this film is children. I love the fact that child actors are being taken more seriously these days. This cast is strong with new faces and and one strangely familiar. The main character is Bill who has a stuttering problem that only proceeds to get worse after the mysterious disappearance of his little brother. He is played by Jaeden Lieberher last scene in Dark comedy St. Vincent with Bill Murray.

There’s also newcomer Jeremy Ray Taylor as the New Kid Ben     Chosen Jacobs who I saw on Hawaii five O plays Mike Hanlon cause let’s be honest there had to be like one black family in this town in Maine. Sadly he plays the survivor of a deadly house fire that claims his parents  

.  

Sophia Lillis makes some elbow room among this boys club as Beverly. A girl with a genuine heart of gold with a very nasty creepy Law & Order SVU father and sadly she has been declared the school skank. .  Then there’s Finn Wolfhard some of you remember him as Zoran from The 100 series but more than likely you know as Mike from Stranger Things he plays Richie Tozier the sharp tongued kid in the group who is actually afraid of clowns.  Also  accompanied by Jack Grazer who plays Eddie the ultimate mamas boy & germaphobe. And Wyatt Oleff who played a younger Star Lord in GOTG plays Stanley the scared and very quiet type.  

In the original mini series series took place in the 60’s. But since it’s 2017 and we love the 80’s that's where this one takes place. How 80’s is it !?  It’s so 80’s that the character Ben is  huge fan of NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK and make references to it to impress Beverly. I guess he think he has

But seriously the main tone of this film is fear. Everyone in this town is caught up in their fears that it controls them. Eddie’s mother has raised him to be afraid of everything and made him believe he had medical conditions. She went as far as to have him taking placebos for sicknesses he didn’t have. She never liked him leaving the house and based off her age I think she knew about IT just like the rest of the town’s adults who were in control. You can’t act like you don’t know what’s going and just implement a curfew   .   Okay so let’s talk about IT’s favorite form Pennywise the dancing clown. The original was played by Tim Curry. His acting is some of the best in the world. You have seen or heard him at some point. I’m not asking I’m telling you check his IMDB. His Pennywise was comedic and scary . But his appearance was friendly and his presentation put kids guard down

which helps lure the kids in.  Whereas Skarsgard appearance look like a failed attempt at being friendly looking .

It appears that the makeup team used prosthesis to give him a baby face appearance but his eyes and five-head give him away. Plus  there’s something about the way he talks, you have to be gullible. I’d like to show a comparison between the two. The same scene one the 2017 version the second the one from the 90’s. I think the costume department did a great job. What I also realized was that the costume is part of the story. I don’t wanna say one is better than the other. I will leave that up to you. While the kids were putting the pieces together with the help Ben’s research it was discovered that IT has been around for hundreds of years. It is reflected in his clothes. Buy the time I get to my 5th time seeing the clown I realized that his clothes are pieces from different time periods which reflect how long he has been around. Which is a really good detail.

This movie make more references to the book than the mini series in my opinion. One thing they kept in. Very few adults , here are not too many adults in this movie and the one we have are very twisted and in some cases perverted. Beverly's father is a prime example. He comes comes off as a possessive and abusive father. The older kids in this movies are hand down the worst bullies I’ve ever seen. There’s a scene where they gang up on Ben and literally begin to carve into his stomach with a knife. Its was hard to watch. Later we see that the bully himself is bullied by his own father. Pennywise senses that fear and convinces him to stab his dad in the neck in his sleep as he appears on a TV in the middle of a kids sing a long    . Sorry I’m trying really hard not to spoil things. Seriously  I’ve been learning that a lot of people have no idea what IT is about. Not ragging on anyone for not knowing about IT just saying I don’t want to spoil it.   

Okay I know getting long in the tooth here. My only issue is there’s a slight plot hole in the third act that I will get into on a video soon. My other is that the movie ended on a light note. The mini series did have a better ending to the first part. Whereas this was like  

which will be going thru your mind thru the whole damn film. If you have not seen this film

so go see it. I had a really fun time watching this movie I have not been scared in a theater in quite some time. It was funny , nostalgic and violent. Also this feels like it could have been a Nightmare on Elm Street movie with the flow of the film (Fred Heads will get this).  Which was a real surprise for me since a lot of mainstream horror has dialed back the violence for basic jump scares. Yes there are jump scares in this movies but they end in gore which cannot be said about most horror films today. I Hope I did not spoil the hell out this film but I want you guys to float your butts down the the theater and check out IT. GRADE: A
