RENT-A-GIRLFRIEND Light slice of life, Drama?

Kanojo Okar

Kanojo Okarishimasu is quite a fan favorite anime airing this summer 2020. While the anime started off with high expectation from its fandom, the adaptation has received its fair share of criticism, over its 12-episode run.

Kanojo Okarishimasu or just, Rent a Girlfriend is a Shonen Romance anime that has somehow managed to put itself apart from other harem anime in the genre, with a story filled with soo much the realism that even the hardcore anime fans have started to take their hands off this anime. So, let us take a deeper look at the anime and see what makes this show soo appealing, yet soo much perplexing at the same time.

Plot:

Kanojo Okarishimasu starts us off with a college student, Kazuya Kinoshita, who just lost his first girlfriend. So, like any other chad in his situation, Kazuya decides to order a rental girlfriend through a mobile app.

He meets his rental Girlfriend, Mizuhara Chizuru, at a subway station and then goes on a date with her. Kazuya here gets charmed by Chizuru, but after reading her reviews on the app, where all her dates went through the same emotions as him, Kazuya leaves a bad review and, being a scum that he is, Kazuya hires Chizuru again for another date.

Chizuru, feeling insulted by Kazuya's bad review goes on a second date with Kazuya, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, she gets introduced to Kazuya's family as his girlfriend, and now they have to pretend to act as fake lovers.

Now, with the plot out of the way, let's take a look at other aspects of this anime!

Animation and Art Direction

When TMS Entertainment announced the anime adaptation of Kanojo Okarishimasu, the fandom was overjoyed because the studio is known to produce excellent anime-like, MegaloBox, ReLife, Orange, etc. And surely, the animation quality of Kanojo Okarishimasu did not disappoint. The anime correctly adapts the manga, panel by panel, in quite an adequate manner. Director Koga Kazuomi actually made the anime into a visually appealing masterpiece.

But where the anime adaptation of Kanojo Okarishimasu actually suffers is that the story that the manga follows in quite painful. As someone who read the manga before actually watching the anime, the animated scenes are some of the most painful scenes in the franchise and they hurt even more than in the manga. But other than that, the anime is a work of art that correctly adapts the beloved manga series and adds in the expected animation flare, which not only adds more value to the franchise and just makes Kanojo Okarishimasu a painful joy to go through.

Music tracks

Kanojo Okarishimasu has some of the best tracks in the currents seasons lineup, which, combined with the great choreography in the opening and endings, sets a delightful tone to the anime and makes it one of the best animes to go through in the summer line up. Other than the main opening and ending, the in episode compositions that set the tone for the ongoing events on the screen is just great. The anime seamlessly transitions from one scene to another, and the soundtracks follow suit with flawless mastery. Takakuwa Hajime, the sound director, has really outdone himself in this anime.

Characters:

Although Kanojo Okarishimasu has two main characters, the series focuses more on the relationship between each character in the anime and how they then grow through those interactions. So just focusing on the two main lead will not do us well, so let's take a look at Kanojo Okarishimasu's main cast and some important key characters in the anime.

Kazuya: Starting off with our male lead, Kazuya is by far the most hated harem protagonist in a harem anime. Although Kazuya acts quite normal and somewhat relatable in some sense. But his actions later on in Kanojo Okarishimasu were scummy and crossed multiple levels of human degeneracy, to say the least.

Kazuya is just the most difficult character to watch in the whole show and is one of the most depraved characters you could ever come across any anime.

Chizuru: Mizuhara Chizuru, unlike our previous entry in the show, is quite the likable, lovable character in the series.

She is like an angel godsend, but she still wants to complete her education above everything else. Chizuru is a strong female main lead in the anime and has standards.

Manami: Next, we have Kazuya's ex-girlfriend, who basically dumped the scummy Kazuya just a month after dating him. But she just does not stop there.

After finding out that scummy Kazuya is getting along with Chizuru, Manami tries to break Kazuya off in a terrible move and is just another hard character to watch in the show.

Ruka: Now, let us talk about one of the most cute characters in the entire anime. Ruka is a girl whose heart beats slower than a normal person, and she is looking for a lover who can make her heart beat faster. Making Manami quite straightforward and honest with her feeling, her tendency to do so can seem a bit clingy and possessive. But the good thing about Ruka is that she is an honest character and is not scummy like Kazuya and is neither idiotic like Manami.

Sumi: Another pure soul, Sumi, is quite the shy yet determined character in the show. Despite her tendency to no speak much and stay quiet, Sumi's introvert personality leads her to overthink matters and get herself lost in her endless monologues. But still, she is one of those characters that you can't help but fall in love with. Sumi is just soo sweet to have any malicious intentions like the scummy Kazuya and well Manami.

Final Thoughts

Kanojo Okarishimasu is an anime that is although difficult to watch because of the degenerative behavior of some of its characters, but once you get over that, the anime becomes a lot more enjoyable and even a masterpiece in terms of animation and story progression that you should definitely check out. The anime, because of its initial barrier, is a 7 out of 10 for me. And if you can ignore that, Kanojo Okarishimasu is definitely a 9 out of 10.

Scissor Seven on Netflix Stream or Skip

STREAM OR SKIP?

Scissor Seven is a Chinese animated series that was streamed in 2018 with the name of Killer Seven. As soon as Netflix streamed this show at the start of 2020, it became a hit globally!

With the increasing popularity of Anime, Netflix has created a whole Anime library for anime fans. Scissor Seven is the first Chinese anime being streamed on Netflix. It’s a serious debate on whether to call it an anime or not, but I won’t get into that discussion for now.

Why Should You Watch Scissor Seven?

If I needed to coat only a single thing in the list of why you should be watching it that would be the COMEDY! It is hilarious! Seven might not be the best killer, but that Goofy-head is the best entertainer for sure!

It is a hilarious satire on the whole hero business, as we can how Seven is nothing but a Professional Goof! Scissors is his ultimate weapon on which he uses his telekinetic abilities. Every Hero needs a sidekick, here our sidekick is an angry bird with cool shades. Our protagonist, along with using telekinetic abilities, can also transform into anything using an enigmatic Gaiba egg!

The whole show follows the crazy adventure of this Goof-ball hitman who ranks 17,369 on the killer list!

This adult anime series has got all the quirky jokes that will give you bursts of laughter from time to time! Each episode is only 15 minutes long that makes it quite easy to binge-watch the entire show in one go, and this show totally deserves it! The on-point humor is something that will keep you hooked on to the screens throughout the run-time!

The action sequences are fun to watch with fluid animation that gets you all hyped up!

The story-line is episodic with the main plot arching up on the whole setting. Let’s see what the plot is all about!

 PLOT

Seven is amnesic about his past life, and being clueless he’s working at a Meet Offal stall on Chicken Island. Along with Dai Bo – a bird-guy who looks more like an angry bird with cool glasses – they plan on becoming assassins as a get-rich scheme. Dai Bo explains how being a mercenary is one of the oldest professions and pays a whole living! Despite being bad at every skill required to become an assassin, Seven is given a certificate of approval from Dai Bo. Seven lacks all the mercenary capabilities and fails at every task as a hitman!

As a cover-up job, Seven becomes a hair-dresser. All this to regain his lost memories at Stan that is the most technically advanced country.

Every episode has got its own story where Seven gets to know his village fellows by signing murder contracts but always ends up helping them with absolutely no blood-
shed. Along the way, Seven also unveils the past memories that makes him question his life purpose.

Animation and Art

Animation and Art of Scissor Seven are going to blow you out! The fluidity in the animation and the hand-drawn style is incredible and never loses a chance to amaze its audience.

The art-style is a mix of Japanese anime and western cartoons. At first, you cannot really tell what it is, but as the series progresses, you get to know how the art-style works. The art-style and animation are extremely dynamic. Everything changes from crayon scribbled light-hearted to a more dark and sharp art-style smoothly.

In my opinion, the crayoned soft pastel style is very pleasing and added on with the flashy graphics; it is a pure delight to watch!

Music and Themes

This is another point where this show stands out! The music and the themes are incredibly made with each one being equally worthy of your adoration!

No matter how much Netflix wants you to skip the opening and closing themes, never do that, I repeat never! This show makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you cringe, makes you feel invested in each and every character!

Characters

                                    Seven (Wu Liuqi)

Seven (Wu Liuqi) is the main protagonist who wants to regain his past memories for which he needs a hefty amount that he plans to earn through being a hitman. This guy is pure fun with his gravity-defying hair and telekinetic scissors!

Dai Bo

This cool angry bird is Seven’s sidekick and helps Seven in his hitman job. In fact, Dai Bo was the one who suggested him to do the meet offal business and also to get into the high paying 2nd oldest profession of assassination! Dai Bo is a cool-headed hilarious bird who wears shades and is an absolute delight to watch.

Xiao Fei

Xiao Fei is a small bird that Seven uses as an escape device. Xiao has got many skills up his feathers (As he got no sleeves) that he uses to help Seven from time to time.

Thirteen

This pretty lady is 37th on the killer list. She has got a faceless mask and the longest braid with a Kunai knife tied at the end. Thirteen follows Seven everywhere to deliver death to him. Seven develops a crush on this mysterious masked assassin and never lets go of a chance of hitting on her.

Season 3

After the surprisingly warm reception of Season 1, Netflix came back with a 2nd Season on May 7. Fans are left with the desperation of wanting more. Seeing the success of this show, Netflix is surely going to come up with another incredible season soon!

Final Say

Scissor Seven is one of the best-animated shows that you can watch right now on Netflix! This series combined slice of life, action, drama, and comedy in a perfect amalgam.

Each episode with only a 15 minutes run-time makes it the best show to binge-watch. If you’re into comedic adult shows, then this is just the show that you are looking for!

As for a final rating, I would personally give this show a 9 out of a 10!

The Saga of Tanya the Evil (Review)

The Saga of Tanya the Evil
A DEFINITE MUST-WATCH!

The saga of Tanya the Evil is a very unique Isekai anime which has gained immense popularity thanks to its amazing story. This anime diverts from the usual Isekai pattern and gives us something brilliant.
The saga of Tanya the Evil is an amazing anime, but the show also has some drawbacks. Today, we will take a closer look at all of the different aspects of this masterwork.
Before anything else, let us take a look at this anime’s plot.
Plot:
As the title of this anime suggests, Saga of Tanya the Evil follows the story of an evil loli called Tanya Degurechaff, who is a young soldier famous for her ruthless behavior on the battlefield. This little girl has even earned herself the nickname of “Devil of the Rhine,” thanks to her sinister personality.

She looks like a harmless little girl, but she is actually the reincarnation of a cunning businessman. Right before his death, this businessman got in a fight with a self-proclaimed God whom he refers to as “Being X.” To get back at him, Being X reincarnated this businessman as a little girl in a very ruthless world filled with war. But to his surprise, this businessman becomes one of the strongest fighters in his new world.

Considering the fact that it is an Isekai anime, the plot of this anime is a definite 10/10. Isekai anime usually suffer from poor writing as they can seem a little too over-the-top, but Saga of Tanya the Evil has a very quirky story which is presented in an even quirkier manner. The plot of this anime alone is enough to catch the attention of anime fans all over the world.

Art and Animation:
The animation is one of the strongest points of this anime. The saga of Tanya the Evil has been animated by Studio Nut, which is a relatively new studio. The transitions between different scenes of this anime are breathtaking, and every scene is a feast for your eyes. The character impressions are also created in a unique and beautiful manner. This anime has definitely managed to create a good reputation for Studio Nut.

Characters and Character Design:
In my personal opinion, the characters’ aspect of this anime is one of its weak points. Don’t get me wrong, the character of Tanya Degurechaff has been handled beautifully. However, the show does not really pay much attention to the side characters. The side characters in this anime are not really rememberable, and their personalities can seem a little vague at times.
The designs of all the characters in this series are brilliant and unique. Each character is given a unique look which fits his/her personality.
Let us take a closer look at the main characters in this anime.

Tanya Degurechaff:
Tanya Degurechaff is the main protagonist of this series and also, an anti-hero. This girl would cross any boundary just to prove being X wrong. In a way, we can even call her the loli version of Hitler, who is out to wreak havoc in the entire world. She only thinks about herself and always gets what she wants.
Tanya’s character design is also quite unique as she is drawn in a very cute and wholesome manner. However, her facial expressions can make even a grown man shiver with fear.

Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakova:
Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakova is a powerful yet naïve mage, who serves under Tanya Degurechaff. This poor girl accidentally becomes the primary candidate to suffer from Tanya’s outrage. However, this girl also gets closer to finding out what Tanya’s real personality is like.
Viktoriya Ivanovna is a pretty bland yet interesting character design. The girl is taller than Tanya and has a pretty beautiful face. She is a very pure-hearted and good character, who looks out for others.

Being X:
Being X is a pretty unique character in this series who seems like a fake God. This self-proclaimed God is trying to punish a man who didn’t take him seriously, and in my personal opinion, that sounds pretty childish. Being X’s personality is quite unique as he tries to use the world around Tanya to get back at her.
Being X doesn’t really have a physical character design as he is represented as a Godly figure.

Soundtracks:

The soundtracks in this anime are quite decent, but they are not really memorable. The opening and ending songs are very chaotic, and they totally represent the theme of this anime. The OSTs in the anime itself are also very good, and they are implemented in a beautiful manner.

The saga of Tanya the Evil Movie:
There is also a movie sequel of this series which is just as good as the first season. The movie sequel captures the essence of this series and presents it in a breathtaking manner. The persistent battle between Tanya and being X still rages on in this sequel.

Enjoyment:
Is this anime entertaining?
Yes, this anime is extremely entertaining!
This anime adaption is very good, and it totally does justice to the source material. Yutaka Uemura has done a very good job as the director of this marvel. The saga of Tanya the Evil is a chaotic thrill ride that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts:

The saga of Tanya the Evil is a must-watch anime that will keep you entertained. This anime has a lot of masterfully planned twists and turns, which build-up the marvelous story.
I wouldn’t call The Saga of Tanya the Evil a masterpiece, but it is still quite decent. This anime has a lot of potentials to grow into a classic, but the first season alone was not enough to do it. We can only hope that a newer season for this anime releases as soon as possible.
I would personally give this anime an 8 out of a 10 as it is a very good watch. I recommend this anime to anyone who is looking for something interesting and short.
